Missy Testerman, the 2024 National Teacher of the Year, will speak at Sul Ross State University on Thursday, Oct. 17, at 4:30 p.m. The event, part of the Poindexter Lecture Series, is hosted by the College of Education and Professional Studies. The public is invited to attend this free lecture.
Testerman, an English as a second language (ESL) specialist from Rogersville City School in Rogersville, Tenn., teaches kindergarten through eighth-grade students who do not speak English as their first language. She is an advocate for her students, their families, and her fellow educators. In her three decades of teaching, Testerman has focused on bridging cultural gaps in her rural Appalachian community, helping students and families from diverse backgrounds feel included.
In her role as National Teacher of the Year, Testerman plans to empower educators to share their classroom experiences and advocate for students and teachers alike. “Teachers are education experts who can inform decision-makers of the realities in today’s classrooms,” she has stated.
Sul Ross State University, founded as a teacher’s college in 1917, continues to prioritize its strong education and teacher certification programs.

Always wonderful to hear stories like this to offset the mess that politics had made of educating students in public schools. Kids are the future of this planet. If Elon Musk were truly concerned about the future of civilization on this planet, he would divert all the millions & attention he creates for the rapist-felon-liar-insurrectionist-cheatin’ former president but never again Trump… divert to teachers & schools who serve up constructive educational & community building opportunities!
