According to Border Report, six people were killed in a series of gun battles between organized criminal groups near the Texas-Mexico border late Sunday and early Monday. The shootings occurred in the municipalities of Ojinaga, Coyame, and Manuel Benavides, which are located just south of the Texas border.
Chihuahua state police reported seizing four abandoned vehicles, including a Chevrolet Avalanche, a Ford F-150 pickup, a Jeep Rubicon, and a Land Rover with Texas license plates. A burned vehicle, whose make is not yet identified, was also found. Authorities recovered two AK-47 rifles, two smoke grenades, and various ammunition at the scene.
Four bodies were discovered in Ojinaga on Monday, with two more bodies later found near Manuel Benavides, about 20 miles southwest of Terlingua, Texas. State police are increasing security in the affected areas, which have seen ongoing violence as cartels battle for control of migrant smuggling routes.
The incident follows a history of cartel violence in the region, including the 2021 disappearance of 13 Mexican migrants, 11 of whom were found in a mass grave. Chihuahua state authorities are investigating social media posts linked to the groups involved in the recent gunbattles, though no motive has been confirmed.
In a separate event, five people were killed at a quinceañera party in Juarez over the weekend. Authorities are continuing to investigate the circumstances of that shooting.
