JJ Montoya, a student from Fort Stockton High School, was among the select group of 40 students chosen from hundreds of applicants to attend a veterinary science camp at Texas A&M University in College Station. The four-day camp, designed for students aged 15-18, provided an in-depth look into various aspects of veterinary medicine.

Montoya shared his thoughts on the experience: “I am honored to have been selected. To be honest, it was an experience that had me worried as I have never attended this kind of educational camp before at such a prestigious university. But it was an experience that was definitely worth it. With the help of the community of Fort Stockton, Mrs. Galindo, the FSHS AG teacher who encouraged me to apply to the vet camp, and my family, I was able to come back home with far more knowledge and determination to one day become a veterinarian.”
The camp featured lectures on a wide range of topics, including equine and cattle care, telemedicine, radiology, imaging, and parasitology. Montoya also had the opportunity to meet and network with students from across Texas and other states, all of whom shared his aspiration to become veterinarians.
Montoya expressed gratitude for the support he received from his community, which played a crucial role in his successful participation in the camp. “Attending lectures at the university where they covered topics such as equine, cattle, telemedicine, radiology and imagery, as well as parasitology. I met students from all over Texas and other states, who like myself, attended camps such as this one with the hopes of one day accomplishing this dream,” he said.
This experience not only broadened Montoya’s knowledge but also reinforced his determination to pursue a career in veterinary medicine. The support from Fort Stockton High School and the local community highlights the importance of encouraging young students to pursue their dreams through educational opportunities.
