Davis Mountains Preserve Open Weekends Scheduled for August and October

The Nature Conservancy’s Davis Mountains Preserve, home to Mount Livermore and Baldy Peak, is set to open its gates to the public for camping, hiking, biking, and other outdoor activities on select weekends in August and October 2024. The preserve, typically closed for research and conservation, will be accessible from August 16-18 and October 11-13, allowing visitors to explore this unique natural area without prior reservations.

  • Time: 8:00 a.m. Friday to 5:00 p.m. Sunday

During these open weekends, attendees can enjoy a range of activities, including picnics, photography, birding, and equestrian pursuits. Overnight camping is available in designated areas, ensuring a full weekend of nature immersion.

Important Information for Visitors:

  • Vehicle Requirements: High-clearance, street-legal vehicles are necessary to drive past the McIvor Conservation Center.
  • Restrictions: Campfires and firearms are prohibited, and pets are not allowed on the preserve, except for licensed service animals.
  • Supervision: Minors under 18 must be accompanied by an adult.
  • Facilities: Public restrooms are available at the McIvor Conservation Center.
  • Preparation: Visitors should bring ample food and water, rain gear, hiking boots, sunscreen, and hats, as weather conditions can be unpredictable.

The strenuous hike to Baldy Peak of Mount Livermore, featuring an elevation gain of 1,800 feet, is a highlight for many visitors. This hike typically takes 4-6 hours to complete for fit hikers. It’s essential to plan accordingly, as gates close promptly at 5:00 p.m. on Sundays.
