The First United Methodist Church of Fort Davis is preparing to vote on whether to separate from the United Methodist Church (UMC) due to concerns over church policies on LGBTQ issues. The congregation, which worships in a historic church in downtown Fort Davis, will decide on this significant matter following recent changes in UMC rules allowing gay pastors and same-sex marriages.
The church council initially set a vote date but later decided to involve the superintendent for the UMC El Paso district to help conduct the election. While the exact date is yet to be determined, the congregation, comprising about 50 members, faces the possibility of a painful divide. According to The Big Bend Sentinel, this decision could lead some members to leave a church their families have attended for generations.
