Rumors Swirl About Potential Dollar General Opening in Terlingua

Rumors are circulating about a potential Dollar General store opening in Terlingua. While Dollar General has not publicly commented, a post on Reddit claims that the company is purchasing the former EMS station on Highway 170, located across from Tivo’s and next to Far Flung Adventures, to tear down and construct a new store.

The post also highlights concerns about Dollar General’s history of violating dark sky ordinances at their Alpine, Marfa, and Presidio locations. These violations remain unresolved despite fines and threats to their building permits. Although Terlingua and Study Butte are unincorporated, Brewster County does have regulations on outdoor lighting and septic systems. It remains to be seen if Dollar General will adhere to these regulations in Terlingua.

The Reddit thread has generated mixed reactions. Some community members express a need for the store, while others strongly oppose it. One redditor commented, “While I understand the probable need for a store and the development of the town, I don’t think a dollar store belongs in that area.” Another voiced a stronger opinion: “Terlingua does not need or want a Dollar General, nor is there a need here for anything they sell. The lack of infrastructure and major development is one of the things that keeps the Big Bend wild, unique, and unlike almost any other place.”

The potential development raises broader questions about the impact of such stores on small communities. Critics argue that dollar stores can harm local businesses and detract from the unique character of areas like Terlingua. Concerns also exist about Dollar General’s employment practices and the quality of jobs it provides.

As of now, no official confirmation has been made by Dollar General, and the community awaits further developments.
