A tornado struck Sanderson this evening, causing significant damage but no immediate reports of serious injuries. Sheriff Thaddeus Cleveland shared photos and videos on Facebook, urging residents to seek shelter.
“Just east of Sanderson coming our way…take cover in town,” Cleveland warned in his post.
Ferguson Motor Company, a beloved local coffee shop and community hub, was among the affected businesses. Despite the damage, the owners reported that they and most residents are safe.
“Hey folks. I’m sure the news is spreading. Sanderson hit by a bad tornado this evening. We are safe and sound. And it appears most everyone in town is safe. The shop took a hit. Salvagable but a road ahead of us. More details and news tomorrow. We love and appreciate all of you and your support,” Ferguson Motor Company posted on social media.
Desert Air Motel, the town’s recently-restored motor lodge reports: “There is no damage at the motel from the tornado that touched down in Sanderson tonight but we are out of power. Please keep our town in your thoughts as other damage is assessed.”
The business, which operates in a former Ford dealership, offers coffee, food, beer, wine, art, local goods, and serves as an events venue.
As the community assesses the damage and begins cleanup efforts, further updates are expected. Residents are advised to stay alert and follow official guidance for safety and recovery.
