Chinati Foundation Invites Enthusiastic Docents to Share Art with the Public

The Chinati Foundation, located in the unique landscape of Marfa, Texas, is seeking passionate individuals to join its team as docents. This part-time position offers a distinctive opportunity to engage with and present the foundation’s esteemed collection of large-scale installations to visitors, playing a critical role in the museum’s educational outreach and visitor experience.

Docents at Chinati are integral to the Visitor Services team, guiding groups through the museum’s expansive grounds and installed spaces, including during the foundation’s celebrated annual open house in October. Entrusted with the security of both the artwork and the spaces, docents ensure the safety of the collection by communicating effectively with visitors and adhering to conservation protocols.

Ideal candidates are those who exhibit excellent communication skills, a readiness to engage with the public, and a genuine interest in learning about Chinati’s collection. The foundation values punctuality, patience, and the ability to lead, navigate, and enforce rules within group settings. No previous experience is required, making this an excellent opportunity for those looking to immerse themselves in the art world.

The docent role offers flexible hours primarily on Thursdays through Sundays, with shifts ranging from 3 to 6 hours per week, allowing for 5 to 20 hours of work depending on individual schedules. Compensation for the role is competitive, with docents earning $115 for Full Collection tours and $65 for Selections tours after completing training and certification.

The Chinati Foundation, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, was established by American artist Donald Judd and is dedicated to the integration of art, architecture, and the natural environment. Situated on 340 acres and within 34 buildings of a former military base, the foundation presents works by Judd and 12 other artists in permanent installations that interact with the landscape and architectural spaces.

Interested individuals are encouraged to apply by emailing their interest to jobs@chinati.org with the subject line “Docent.” The Chinati Foundation is an Equal Opportunity Employer, committed to fostering an inclusive and diverse work environment. Accommodations will be provided for qualified individuals with disabilities.

This role offers a rare chance to contribute to the preservation and presentation of some of the most significant art installations of the 20th and 21st centuries, within the context of Donald Judd’s visionary project in Marfa, Texas. It’s an invitation to become part of a team that supports a deep engagement with art, architecture, and the landscape in one of the most extraordinary settings for contemporary art in the world.
