Sul Ross State University’s Black Student Association Honors MLK Day with Community Service Project

In a heartfelt tribute to the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., the Black Student Association (BSA) at Sul Ross State University (SRSU) in Alpine, Texas, embraced the spirit of service and community on this year’s MLK Day. Collaborating with the Office of Civic Engagement and Student Assistance, the BSA members engaged in a meaningful service project that reached out to the local community with generosity and support.

Throughout the winter break, students diligently collected hygiene donations, setting the stage for their first gathering of the new semester. In early January, approximately 12 members of the BSA came together to assemble and decorate 25 boxes with hopeful messages and filled them with essential items including hygiene supplies, notebooks, and water bottles. Additionally, the group prepared 50 grab ‘n’ go hygiene kits, further amplifying their impact.

The beneficiaries of this thoughtful effort were the individuals served by the Family Crisis Center of the Big Bend, a constant supporter of the Sul Ross community. Smith extended gratitude to everyone who participated and contributed to the success of the project.

MLK Day is commemorated annually on the third Monday of January, encouraging individuals and organizations nationwide to engage in volunteerism and service in honor of Dr. King’s enduring legacy of peace, justice, and equality.

The presentation of the hygiene boxes to the Family Crisis Center of the Big Bend was a moment of pride and community spirit. BSA members, including Darion Brown, Cassig Hogan, Jadah Smith, Amber Silvas, and Jayden Floyd, along with Letty Carrillo and Virginia Sandoval from the Family Crisis Center, came together to celebrate the successful completion of the project.

This initiative by the SRSU Black Student Association not only honored the memory of Martin Luther King Jr. but also exemplified the power of community engagement and the impact of collective efforts towards making a difference in the lives of others.
