The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) is on the lookout for a dedicated individual to join their team as a Fish and Wildlife Technician I, focusing on wildlife conservation efforts at the Elephant Mountain Wildlife Management Area (WMA) within the Trans-Pecos Ecosystem Project.
Under the direct supervision of the Trans-Pecos Ecosystem Project Leader, the selected candidate will undertake a variety of responsibilities aimed at preserving and enhancing the local wildlife habitat. These duties encompass assisting with habitat management, infrastructure maintenance, equipment upkeep, grounds keeping, public engagement, and participation in research activities.
This full-time position, with a standard workweek of 40 hours, offers a competitive salary ranging from $3,818.64 per month, along with a range of benefits including paid time off, group insurance, retirement and pension plans, and ample training and development opportunities. Applicants must meet certain qualifications to be considered for this role, including a high school diploma or GED, along with two years of relevant experience. Additionally, possession of a valid state driver’s license is required, with the potential need to obtain the National Wildfire Coordinating Group (NWCG) Fire Fighter Type II certification within the first year of employment.
Physical fitness is paramount for this position, as candidates must pass either the FFTII moderate duty or arduous duty physical fitness standard within one year of employment. These standards involve walking specified distances with weighted packs. Furthermore, applicants should be prepared to conduct low-level aerial surveys without air sickness and comply with aircraft weight restrictions.
While experience in wildlife management, farm or ranch operations, building maintenance, and heavy equipment operation is preferred, TPWD will consider applicants with a Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field as a substitution for the required experience.
Successful candidates will demonstrate proficiency in various skills including effective communication, operation of farming and ranching machinery, use of hand and power tools, and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
