Managed by the Reeves County Water Improvement District Number 1, Balmorhea Lake spans an area of 556 acres, with a maximum depth of 25 feet and a surface elevation of 3,187 feet. Fed by water from Toyah Creek, enriched by the nearby San Solomon Springs, and supplemented by excess water from the Phantom Lake Canal, the reservoir boasts a water volume of 6,350 acre-feet.
Despite facing challenges such as past golden alga blooms, the fishery of Balmorhea Lake is showing signs of recovery. Notably, the lake has not experienced a major alga-related fish kill since 2013. Among the predominant fish species found in its waters are largemouth bass, crappie, sunfish, and channel catfish. The reservoir was last stocked in 2019 with fingerling catfish, white crappie, and Florida largemouth bass, enhancing the fishing experience for enthusiasts.

Picnic sites offer a serene setting for family outings, while RV and tent camping areas cater to overnight adventurers. However, access to the lake is subject to seasonal variations. The one-lane concrete ramp, utilized for boat launching, may be out of water during the summer months due to fluctuating water levels. Additionally, a nominal fee is required for entry, with the facility open year-round to accommodate outdoor enthusiasts regardless of the season.
