A significant change is underway in the heart of the Trans-Pecos region as Porter’s stores in Marfa, Presidio, Alpine, Fort Davis, and Van Horn undergo an ownership transition. On December 1, 2023, Porter’s, a fixture in these communities for 78 years, will officially change hands to Lowe’s Markets, a Texas-based company located in Littlefield.
The Porter family’s legacy in the Trans-Pecos area began when Ray and Tiny Porter arrived from Colepool, Oklahoma, in the 1940s. Their initial establishment, Modern Foods, marked the beginning of a family-owned business deeply rooted in principles of hard work and community service. Over the years, ownership passed through generations, with Denny Porter taking the reins, followed by his sons, Trae and Judd, and his son-in-law, T.O. Clark. Despite name changes over the years, their commitment to core values remained steadfast.
These Porter’s stores have played essential roles in their respective communities. From Marfa’s artistic enclave to Presidio’s border-town vitality, Alpine’s collegiate atmosphere, Fort Davis’s historic charm, and Van Horn’s resilient desert character, each store has been a symbol of quality and service.
As the Porter family and their dedicated team members prepare to serve their final Thanksgiving season under their ownership, they express profound gratitude to the communities that have supported them over the years. While ownership changes hands, the legacy of dedication and community spirit, established by Ray and Tiny Porter, will persist under the Lowe family’s stewardship.
