Sul Ross State University’s Provocative Production of “Oleanna” Addresses Timely Issues

The Sul Ross State University Department of Visual and Performing Arts is set to captivate audiences with their presentation of “Oleanna,” a gripping play written by Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright David Mamet. Opening on Friday, October 13, at 7:30 p.m., this thought-provoking production promises to explore the complex themes of sexual harassment, abuse of power, privilege, gender dynamics, and political correctness on a college campus.

“Oleanna” delves into the turbulent encounter between a female undergraduate student, Carol, and her male university professor, John, when they convene to discuss her failing grade. What starts as a seemingly innocuous meeting escalates into a series of accusations that jeopardize John’s career, leaving the audience questioning who holds the moral high ground.

Originally premiering on Broadway in 1992 with acclaimed performances by William H. Macy and Rebecca Pidgeon, “Oleanna” garnered attention for its unflinching exploration of timely and contentious issues. The New York Times, in its review, noted how the play’s themes of sexual harassment and power dynamics remained highly relevant even years after its debut.

Director and Associate Professor of Communication and Theatre, Marjie Scott, commented on the timeliness of the production, stating, “This play feels very timely. The issues of power dynamics, sexual harassment, and censorship are still so relevant, especially on college campuses. What I love about this play is that both characters are culpable. John and Carol each manipulate and abuse power. Even after working on this play for months, I find myself looking at both sides and feeling sympathy and outrage.”

“Oleanna” will run on weekends from October 13 to 29 in the François Fine Arts Building Studio Theatre, featuring performances on Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m. General admission tickets are priced at $15, with a reduced rate of $10 available for seniors aged 65 and older. Admission is free for all Sul Ross State University students, faculty, and staff with valid identification, as well as U.S. veterans.
