Stone Circle – Full Moon Activation: A Spectacle of Light and Sound
In the heart of the high desert grasslands just east of Marfa, Texas, a remarkable fusion of art and nature awaits enthusiasts of both ancient mysticism and contemporary creativity. Haroon Mirza’s “stone circle,” a monumental outdoor sculpture, pays homage to the enigmatic megaliths of yore while harnessing the power of the modern-day sun. As each full moon graces the Texas sky, this captivating installation awakens with an ethereal blend of sound and light, beckoning visitors to immerse themselves in a unique sensory experience.
The Genesis of Stone Circle
Inspired by the timeless grandeur of Stonehenge and the Nine Ladies, Haroon Mirza’s stone circle, commissioned by Ballroom Marfa, stands as a testament to human creativity and its communion with the Earth. Eight majestic stones, each meticulously carved to incorporate LED lights and embedded speakers, form the circle. The ninth stone, aptly named the “mother” stone, resides apart from the circle, adorned with solar panels that charge a bank of batteries. This energy reserve fuels a mesmerizing sound and light composition, triggered into action under the full moon’s radiant glow.
The Solar Symphony
The stone circle is part of Mirza’s Solar Symphonies series and represents an ambitious endeavor for Ballroom Marfa, following in the footsteps of Elmgreen & Dragset’s iconic Prada Marfa installation from 2005. This captivating sculpture will grace the landscape for several years, providing an intriguing fusion of art and sustainable energy.
The project’s local impact has been significant, thanks to partnerships forged with Freedom Solar, Texas’s largest solar energy provider. During the installation of the artwork, dozens of local homes and businesses transitioned to solar power, leaving a lasting, positive mark on the community.
