A new beacon of community service has emerged in Presidio as the Lions Club officially formed its presence in the area. Named “Presidio del Norte,” this new club has received approval as of August 26, 2023, and is set to make a positive impact on the local community.
In a heartwarming inaugural gathering, members of the Presidio del Norte Lions Club came together for a delightful potluck meal and a warm meet-and-greet session. The event provided an opportunity for members to forge personal connections and establish a sense of camaraderie that will be integral to their community endeavors.
During this inaugural meeting, community needs and aspirations were discussed, laying the foundation for the Lions Club’s mission in Presidio. With the spirit of a lion’s courage, the club members are eager to transform their shared vision into a reality.
One of the club’s primary objectives is to serve the children of Presidio County. The Texas Lions Camp offers a free program designed for children with learning impairments and disabilities, providing them with an opportunity to overcome challenges and develop enduring life skills. The Presidio del Norte Lions Club is committed to facilitating this invaluable experience for local children.
Another noteworthy initiative on the club’s agenda is the establishment of an EyeGlass Recycling Center. This center will collect used eyeglasses and refurbish them for individuals in need, all at no cost. The significance of this initiative lies in addressing the issue of uncorrected refractive errors, which affect an estimated 120 million people worldwide, hindering their access to education, employment, and an improved quality of life.
The journey of recycled glasses involves Lions and Leos collecting used eyeglasses from various community locations. These glasses are then sent to the nearest Lions Eyeglass Recycling Center, where dedicated volunteers meticulously sort, clean, and determine the prescription strengths of each pair. Suitable glasses are carefully packaged and stored for dispensing missions, while those not suitable for reuse are recycled for scrap, with the proceeds supporting local Lions and Leos projects.
At the mission site, eye care professionals and trained Lion and Leo volunteers perform vision screenings and provide the appropriate recycled glasses to children and adults in need, all free of charge.
The formation of the Presidio del Norte Lions Club signifies a commitment to community welfare, reflecting the Lions Club’s worldwide mission of “We Serve.” As the club embarks on its journey of service and compassion, Presidio, Texas, can anticipate positive change and a brighter future for its residents.
