Nestled in the heart of Far West Texas, amidst a backdrop of the vast Big Bend landscape, Marfa—a small town of fewer than 2,000 residents—is an unlikely hub for contemporary art and performance. Located at 108 E. San Antonio St., Ballroom Marfa has been at the center of this artistic renaissance.

Founded in 2003 by Virginia Lebermann and Fairfax Dorn, Ballroom Marfa stands as a testament to the transformative power of art. This internationally recognized, non-collecting museum is housed in a refurbished 1920s-era ballroom and is committed to making art accessible to all, offering free entry to visitors.
Largely driven by the support from individual donors and foundations, Ballroom Marfa’s ethos is centered around commissioning site-specific and site-inspired projects. By giving artists and musicians an opportunity to engage deeply with the surrounding landscape, the museum has birthed many noteworthy projects. These range from “Kite Symphony,” a film piece by Roberto Lange (known to many as Helado Negro) and Kristi Sword, to “Prada Marfa,” a site-specific sculpture by Elmgreen & Dragset that has caught the attention of art enthusiasts globally.
Moreover, the 2019 performance “bust: indestructible columns” by rafa esparza stood out for its audacious presentation on the South Lawn of the White House, critiquing established symbols of American power.
Beyond its physical exhibits, Ballroom Marfa’s mission echoes the broader values of artistic freedom and expression. The institution serves as a collaborative platform for artists, musicians, and thinkers of diverse backgrounds. Their extensive programs encompass exhibitions, screenings, concerts, and educational initiatives, ensuring a holistic approach to the arts.
By championing the belief that art has the capability to enlighten and reshape perspectives, Ballroom Marfa aims to forge cultural connections that inspire both local residents and visitors from across the globe.
