Big Bend Dark Sky Reserve – In the sprawling expanses of West Texas lies a star-studded oasis: the Greater Big Bend International Dark Sky Reserve, the world’s largest area certified by DarkSky International. Spanning over an impressive 15,000 square miles, this region stands as a beacon of inspiration for night sky preservation efforts worldwide.

A Dark Sky Reserve is composed of a core area, surrounded by a peripheral area with enforced light pollution controls. Prior to its certification in 2022, the Greater Big Bend area was already home to a network of parks and protected lands that were diligently working to safeguard the majesty of the night sky. Among these are the Big Bend National Park, Big Bend Ranch State Park, Black Gap Wildlife Management Area, and Chinati State Natural Area, all certified Dark Sky Parks or Sanctuaries.
The region is also home to the community of Sierra La Rana, distinguished as a Dark Sky Development of Distinction. The creation of the Greater Big Bend International Dark Sky Reserve built upon these existing designations to encompass the entire Big Bend region, thus creating an expansive, unified sanctuary for celestial observation and appreciation.
In a world increasingly mired in artificial light pollution, the Greater Big Bend International Dark Sky Reserve serves as a testament to the importance of preserving the natural beauty of the night sky. It stands as a globally recognized example of successful local collaboration for the conservation of our shared cosmic heritage.
