Firefighters from Fort Davis Volunteer Fire Department and the Davis Mountain Resort Volunteer Fire Department have been tirelessly battling the Red Barn 7 Fire since yesterday. As of the evening, this wildfire, which is situated in the hills south of the State Park, has engulfed approximately 150 acres.
According to a post on the Fort Davis Fire Department’s Facebook page, this wildfire was initiated by a lightning strike yesterday afternoon. It reignited with greater intensity in the afternoon heat. Despite the dense fuel in the hill’s lower regions causing substantial smoke plumes, current wind conditions remain mild. While the sight of the smoke might be alarming, there are currently no threats to any structures.
In a bid to bolster efforts to contain the spreading fire, additional support was summoned. The Texas Forest Service crews from Ft. Stockton heeded the call, arriving around 7pm. The reinforcement comprised a ten-person hand crew, an engine, a safety officer, a medical team, and a type 3 Incident Commander.
