The Chinati Foundation is poised to once again transform the town of Marfa, Texas into a celebration of art, creativity, and community with its upcoming Chinati Weekend 2023, taking place from Friday, October 6 to Sunday, October 8.
The weekend will commence with “Made in Marfa” on Friday evening, a series of openings and events hosted by local organizations, setting the scene for the festive days ahead. That same night, audiences will have the opportunity to enjoy the Open Studio event, where Chinati Artist in Residence, Mike Crane, will present new works on paper at the Locker Plant.
Saturday morning sees the grand opening of “Cosmos/Continuous Line”, an installation of loom-based textiles by Zapotec weaver and dyer, Porfirio Gutiérrez, complete with artist remarks and a champagne toast. The special exhibition space will then host a performance from choreographer Laura Gutierrez and cellist Matt Haimovitz on Sarah Crowner’s Platform (Blue Green Terracotta for JC).
The afternoon promises an enlightening artist talk, featuring Porfirio Gutiérrez and curator Ingrid Schaffner at the Crowley Theater. As the sun begins to set, a benefit dinner, catered by Taft+Diaz and Cierto Tequila, will be held in the Arena.
The first day’s festivities will conclude with a soulful performance by Grammy-winning artist Corinne Bailey Rae, serenading audiences with her hit song “Black Rainbows” at Saint George Hall.
Sunday morning brings a unique experience: a sunrise viewing of Robert Irwin’s untitled (dawn to dusk), 2016 installation, an exquisite way to begin the day. The weekend will then wrap up with a screening of “Robert Irwin: A Desert of Pure Feeling, 2022,” followed by a Q&A with special guests at the Crowley Theater.
All events, except for the benefit dinner, are free and open to the public, providing locals and visitors alike a chance to experience Marfa’s thriving art scene. The dinner’s ticket prices range from $1,000 to $30,000, with discounted rates for Chinati members and area residents.
Chinati Weekend 2023 is expected to be a vibrant blend of art, performance, and community that embodies the spirit of Marfa’s unique culture and artistic dynamism. As the event nears, anticipation builds for what promises to be a memorable, illuminating weekend.
