Alpine Police Chief Urges Four-Way Stops and Uniform Speed Limits for Enhanced Road Safety

During a recent Alpine City Council meeting, Police Chief Darrell Losoya recommended the addition of four new four-way stops and the implementation of a uniform speed limit across the city. Losoya’s proposals aim to address concerns regarding speeding and accidents, receiving agreement from council members who believe their constituents would support a consistent approach to road regulations.

The four intersections identified by Losoya as particularly dangerous, according to Texas Department of Transportation accident records and his department’s observations, are Ave. A & 8th, Sul Ross & 8th, Del Rio and 8th, and 7th Street near a recently constructed multi-family development. Del Rio & 8th has witnessed injuries resulting from collisions, while Sul Ross & 8th has experienced multiple accidents. Highlighting the urgency of the situation, the police chief stressed the need for immediate action.

In response to the chief’s recommendations, the council unanimously agreed and is now preparing to implement the proposed changes. City Manager Megan Antrim provided an update, mentioning that the city has initiated the process of assessing the number of speed limit signs that will require replacement. Antrim also suggested a phased approach to ensure a smooth transition.

The proposed uniform speed limit of 25 miles per hour would replace the current speed variations across Alpine’s streets, where limits range from 20 to 30 miles per hour. This uniformity aims to simplify compliance and reduce confusion for motorists navigating the city’s road network. Additionally, the installation of four-way stops at critical intersections will enhance traffic control and improve safety for both drivers and pedestrians.

The council’s support for the chief’s recommendations reflects a commitment to prioritize the safety and well-being of Alpine residents. Through City Manager Antrim’s careful planning and collaborative approach, the city is taking proactive measures to create a safer driving environment. By implementing these changes, Alpine aims to address pressing safety concerns and promote responsible road usage.
