Dr. Suzanne Harris, a Sul Ross State University (SRSU) alumna, has been named as the new Dean of Students. Harris obtained her Bachelor of Arts in Theatre and Master of Arts in Public Administration from SRSU in 1999 and 2002, respectively. She completed her Doctoral degree in Education Leadership from Capella University, Minneapolis, with her dissertation focusing on equality in freshman orientation programs and student retention.
As an advising specialist at SRSU, Harris designed and developed programs to enhance student retention and success, including a peer mentor program. She later became the Director of TRIO Student Support Services, where she developed a student mentoring program, academic support program, and supplemental instruction. Harris also worked as a project manager for a multi-million-dollar federal grant program, Title V, where she oversaw the remodel and construction of the Lobo Den, a student advising center, and delivered first-year programming including learning communities and new student orientation.
Harris most recently served as the Director for Academic Affairs in the Office of the Provost, where she was responsible for implementing academic policies and procedures and assisting with operations, such as the introduction of the online bookstore.
Expressing gratitude for the opportunity to help students create lasting memories and acquire the necessary skills to succeed in their future endeavors, Harris said, “Once a Lobo, always a Lobo!”. Harris is the mother of six children, one of whom is enrolled at SRSU, and her husband is a Licensed Professional Counselor and SRSU graduate. Her mother, grandmother, brother, and two sisters-in-law are all SRSU alumni.
