A former Andrews police officer has been sentenced to a total of 50 years in prison in two child injury cases, including one involving an infant hospitalized with a fractured skull and bleeding in the brain, authorities said.
Micah Caleb Smyth pleaded guilty this week in 109th District Court to two counts of injury to a child causing serious bodily injury. Authorities said he received sentences of 40 years and 10 years.
Andrews is in the Permian Basin, northwest of Odessa.
The investigation into the infant’s injuries began Aug. 20, 2025, when the child’s mother brought the 4-month-old to PRMC. An affidavit states that she told hospital employees Smyth had dropped the baby accidentally while assisting her older child in a bathroom.
Hospital personnel alerted authorities, and the infant was transferred to Covenant Children’s Hospital. Doctors documented a skull fracture, brain bleeding, bruising on the baby’s back and a rib fracture that had begun healing.
According to the affidavit, physicians determined that a simple fall did not account for the extent of the injuries and believed the baby had been physically abused.
Texas Rangers took Smyth into custody the following day in Lubbock. The other count involved a separate incident in 2022.
