State Sen. Roland Gutierrez to hold Alpine town hall Monday ahead of courthouse meeting

State Sen. Roland Gutierrez, whose District 19 includes much of the Big Bend region, is scheduled to meet with residents Monday, Oct. 26, during a town hall in Alpine, ahead of a Tuesday morning gathering at the Brewster County Courthouse.

The town hall will take place from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at Hotel Ritchey, 102 E. Murphy Ave. The event is being promoted by No Big Bend DC, a local organization opposing proposed data center development in the region.

The gathering will provide an opportunity for residents to speak directly with Gutierrez about issues affecting Far West Texas, including concerns surrounding proposed large-scale data center development and its potential effects on local communities.

Gutierrez, a Democrat from San Antonio, represents Senate District 19, a geographically expansive district that includes Brewster, Jeff Davis and Presidio counties, along with other communities across South and West Texas.

The senator has served in the Texas Senate since 2021, following his election in 2020. Before joining the Senate, he represented part of San Antonio in the Texas House of Representatives.

The event comes amid growing debate over the future of development in the Big Bend region, where residents have raised questions about water availability, electricity demand, environmental impacts and the preservation of the area’s rural character.

Organizers are also promoting a follow-up gathering at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 27, at the courthouse in Alpine. The announcement does not specify the purpose or format of the courthouse gathering.

The town hall announcement encourages residents to participate and make their concerns known to their state senator.
