Researchers radio-collar 120-pound black bear near Rio Grande

A 120-pound female black bear was captured and fitted with a radio collar Sept. 16 as researchers began their annual bear-trapping season along the Texas borderlands.

The Borderlands Research Institute at Sul Ross State University said the collar will help researchers better understand how bears move across the international boundary and throughout the Rio Grande region.

Black bears have increasingly returned to portions of West Texas after being largely absent from the region for decades. Tracking individual bears allows researchers to study their movements, habitat use and interactions with communities on both sides of the border.

The institute is asking landowners who regularly see bears on their property to contact its research team at bri@sulross.edu.
