Fort Davis Independent School District has canceled its 2026 high school football season because of a lack of student participation and low numbers at the middle school level, Superintendent Jason Crow announced.
“While we realize this is an unfortunate situation, we will continue to work to rebuild and return to the field next season,” Crow said in a letter to the Fort Davis community.
The district did not provide specific enrollment or participation numbers that led to the decision.
The cancellation means Fort Davis will go without varsity football this fall, although the district indicated that some of the traditions surrounding the season will continue.
Crow said additional information will be released about homecoming and pep rallies planned for the school year.
Fort Davis ISD, which competes in six-man football, serves one of the smaller student populations in Far West Texas. Small rural districts can face particular challenges fielding football teams because even a relatively small change in enrollment or participation can leave a program without enough players to safely compete.
The district said it plans to work toward rebuilding the program with the goal of returning Fort Davis football to the field for the 2027 season.
