An Alpine printing business says it has adopted a policy of refusing work from companies involved in border wall construction, saying it will not support a project that many in the Big Bend region oppose.
Printco announced the decision in a social media post Thursday, saying two men came into the shop seeking to order signage. After learning they were subcontractors working on border wall construction, the business declined the job.
“A couple of guys showed up at Printco today to order some signage,” the business wrote. “Once we realized they were subcontractors for wall construction, we turned down the job.”
The company acknowledged that rejecting the work carried a financial cost.
“Could we have used the work? Absolutely,” the post said. “We’re a small shop with a few mouths to feed and a kid in college. But we won’t abandon the people who have been doing business with us for years, who depend on tourism or love the land that we call home, to make a quick buck.”
Printco said it is “100% in this fight” and encouraged others who oppose the border wall to take similar action. The post included the hashtags #noalmuro and #protectbigbend.
A sign displayed on the front door of the business reads: “No Wall Contractors or Subcontractors. We Will Refuse Your Business!”
The policy comes as opposition to federal border wall construction has intensified across the Big Bend region. Local residents, business owners and conservation advocates have organized protests, petition drives and other efforts opposing construction, arguing it threatens the area’s natural landscape, wildlife habitat and tourism-based economy.
