The Presidio Police Department is reminding residents that animal cruelty is a criminal offense under Texas law following reports that a puppy was found abandoned at the Presidio landfill.
In a public notice posted this week, the department said certain acts of animal cruelty are classified as a Class A misdemeanor and may result in criminal charges.
“Our Police Department takes all reports of animal cruelty seriously and is committed to investigating these cases thoroughly,” the department wrote. “If you witness or suspect an animal is being abused or neglected, please report it immediately.”
The reminder comes after Presidio Pets, Paws and Hooves shared photographs of a young puppy reportedly found at the city’s landfill. The animal rescue organization wrote, “The Presidio Landfill is not intended for disposing of a puppy,” alongside images showing the dog and the area where it was discovered.
Police did not identify the specific incident in their public notice but emphasized that animal cruelty “is a serious offense and will not be tolerated in our community.”
The department encouraged anyone who witnesses or suspects animal abuse or neglect to report it immediately so officers can investigate.
Texas law prohibits a range of conduct involving the abuse, neglect and abandonment of animals, with penalties varying depending on the circumstances and severity of the offense.
