Smiley, a young dog who has made significant progress since arriving at the Alpine Animal Services Shelter, has been named the shelter’s Pet of the Week.
Through Sunday, July 19, Smiley can be adopted for $50, half the shelter’s normal adoption fee. The fee includes her spay procedure, microchip, heartworm test and vaccinations.
Smiley arrived at the shelter April 27 with four siblings after the unwanted litter was surrendered.
Shelter staff said Smiley was initially shy, but regular attention from employees and volunteers has helped improve her confidence and social skills. She is now more likely to approach her kennel door to investigate visitors and enjoys calm petting sessions.
Smiley has also performed well in play groups and could thrive in a home with other dogs, according to the shelter.
She is making strong progress with leash training and generally keeps her kennel clean, meaning she may need only minimal additional house training. Shelter staff said she will benefit from a patient, understanding home that can provide consistency and help her adjust to a new routine.
Staff members said Smiley lives up to her name by thumping her tail, squinting her eyes and appearing to smile when she meets someone she likes. Once she wants attention, they said, she is not afraid to ask for it.
Smiley is available to meet at the Alpine Animal Services Shelter, 2900 Old Marathon Highway in Alpine.
