A social media auditing group operating through the Amagansett Press Videos Facebook page recently visited the Fort Stockton Police Department, where members raised concerns about a frayed American flag flying outside the facility and questioned signage posted at the building.
According to video posted online by the group, members initially approached the police department and reported receiving no response after knocking on the department’s door. They later spoke with Fort Stockton police officers about several issues they observed at the facility.
During the encounter, the group pointed to the condition of the American flag displayed outside the department, noting visible wear and fraying along the edge of the flag.
One officer acknowledged the concern and told the group he had noticed the flag’s condition the previous day. The officer said he would bring the matter to the attention of his sergeant.
The visitors also questioned signs posted at the building prohibiting weapons and concealed weapons, raising concerns about whether the signage complied with applicable Texas law governing government buildings. No determination regarding the legality of the signs was made during the exchange.
The U.S. Flag Code states that when an American flag becomes worn or tattered to the point that it is no longer a fitting emblem for display, it should be retired in a dignified manner.
It was not immediately known whether the flag had been replaced following the visit.
