An armed man was taken to a hospital for evaluation Wednesday afternoon after an approximately 90-minute law enforcement response at the Fort Stockton VA Clinic, officials said.
Pecos County Emergency Management Coordinator Jessie Dominguez told Fort Stockton Pioneer that the initial call came in at about 3:35 p.m. after an elderly man from out of town arrived at the clinic armed with a handgun.
Clinic employees were evacuated while multiple agencies, including the Texas Department of Public Safety, the Fort Stockton Police Department and other responders, secured the scene.
Dominguez said the man did not threaten anyone and indicated he had gone to the clinic intending to harm himself. Officials said there was no shooting, no hostages and no injuries to employees, patients or first responders.
Responders negotiated with the man for about an hour and a half before the situation was de-escalated without the use of force.
The man was transported to a hospital for evaluation.
Photos from the scene showed a heavy law enforcement presence outside the VA clinic near West 12th Street, including vehicles that appeared to be from Fort Stockton police, DPS and the Pecos County Sheriff’s Office.
Officials said there is no ongoing threat to the public.
