Petition opposing Big Bend border wall tops 100,000 signatures

A Change.org petition opposing border wall construction in Big Bend Ranch State Park and Big Bend National Park has surpassed 100,000 signatures as concern grows over federal plans for barriers in the Big Bend region.

The petition, titled “Stop the construction of the wall in Big Bend Ranch State Park & Big Bend National Park,” argues that wall construction would harm wildlife, water systems, tourism and the scenic character of one of Texas’ most iconic landscapes.

The petition cites concerns that federal officials have waived environmental and historic preservation laws to speed border wall construction, including protections under the National Environmental Policy Act, Endangered Species Act and Clean Water Act.

Recent reporting has said federal plans for physical barriers in some parts of Big Bend have shifted, but construction contracts and wall-related work remain a concern for residents, conservation groups and tourism advocates in the region.

Supporters of the petition say Big Bend’s rugged terrain, wildlife habitat and tourism economy make it an inappropriate place for a border wall. The petition urges decision-makers to protect West Texas, preserve public lands and oppose construction that organizers say would cause irreversible damage.

A Change.org page listed the petition at more than 133,000 signatures Friday.
