Ojinaga is celebrating one of its hometown athletes after race walker Alegna González captured gold and set a new Mexican record in the 21-kilometer event at the Gran Premio Internacional de Rio Maior in Portugal.
According to the Municipal Government of Ojinaga, the Chihuahua native finished with a historic time of 1:32:15, earning first place in the international competition.
Officials said the performance established a new Mexican record and currently stands as the fourth-best mark in the world so far this year during the 2026 season.
The city praised González’s discipline, perseverance and dedication, calling her accomplishment a source of pride for Ojinaga, Chihuahua and Mexico.
“Her discipline, consistency and dedication are an example that when things are done well, great things can be achieved,” the city said in a congratulatory message.
González, one of Mexico’s top race walkers, continues to elevate the profile of Ojinaga and Chihuahua on the international stage through her performances in global competition.
