Residents and visitors are invited to celebrate Independence Day during Marathon’s annual July Fourth festivities, with a packed schedule of events planned across July 3-4, including fireworks, a parade, chili cook-offs, tournaments, live music and family activities.
Festivities begin Friday, July 3, with the Marathon Volunteer Fire Department silent auction opening at noon at the Marathon Community Center. The volunteer fire department’s Cowboy Chili Cook-Off turn-in is scheduled for 6 p.m., followed by Marathon PTO Bingo Night at 7 p.m.
A fireworks show is planned for 8:45 p.m., with organizers encouraging attendees to watch from the Gage side of Highway 90.
The celebration continues Saturday, July 4, beginning with the annual Fourth of July parade on Main Street at 10 a.m.
The Marathon PTO will host a brisket lunch beginning at 11 a.m. at Post Park, with plates available until sold out. A fishing tournament is planned from noon to 2 p.m. at Post Park.
Additional events Saturday include the conclusion of the volunteer fire department’s silent auction at 2 p.m. and the Mustang Chili Cook-Off turn-in at the Marathon Community Center, also at 2 p.m.
Community activities continue at Post Park with a washers tournament from 3 to 5 p.m. and “Post Park Fun” from 5 to 9 p.m., featuring food, drinks, vendors, volleyball and additional activities.
The weekend celebration wraps up with live music and dancing from 9 p.m. to midnight featuring Craig Carter & The Spur of the Moment Band. Organizers said a live auction benefiting Friends of the Post will also take place during the evening entertainment.
The annual celebration brings together Marathon residents and visitors for one of the community’s signature holiday weekends in Far West Texas.
