Undergraduate students from Sul Ross State University’s Rio Grande College of Business completed internships with the City of Alpine during the spring semester, contributing to a utilities billing system update within the city’s accounting department.
Students recognized for their work included Josabeth Hernandez, Joshua Hernandez, Sebastian Lefeiloai and Ebenezer Malone. The interns were presented with certificates of appreciation by the Alpine City Council during its May 5 meeting.
The internship program was developed through collaboration between the Rio Grande College of Business and local business leaders, offering students hands-on experience in municipal finance and accounting operations while supporting a key city project.
Phillip Carey, president of West Texas National Bank and a member of the college’s advisory council, said the partnership reflects the goals of connecting students with real-world opportunities.
“I am very thankful for the quick response that the dean and faculty provided when I called and said the City of Alpine needs some interns for their finance department,” Carey said. “These internships allow our future business leaders real-world experience while studying at Sul Ross State University.”
University officials said the initiative highlights a continued emphasis on experiential learning, preparing students for careers in business, finance and public service while strengthening connections with the surrounding community.

The Rio Grande College of Business provides business education across the university’s campuses in Alpine, Eagle Pass, Del Rio and Uvalde, as well as online, and is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs.
