An officer-involved shooting ended a pursuit tied to a reported house burglary in Valentine early Monday, with the suspect fatally shot after allegedly firing at the county sheriff, according to preliminary information.
Sources said the incident began as a burglary at a residence in Valentine, prompting a response from the Jeff Davis County Sheriff’s Office. Victor Lopez pursued the suspect, who fled the scene.
During the pursuit, the suspect reportedly fired at Lopez, and the sheriff returned fire, killing the suspect. Authorities have not yet publicly released the identity of the suspect.
The pursuit ended on Ranch-to-Market Road 505. An earlier lockdown at Valentine Independent School District, implemented as a precaution during the search, has since been lifted.
The Texas Rangers will lead the investigation into the shooting, which is standard protocol in officer-involved incidents.
No law enforcement personnel were reported injured. Assisting agencies included the Marfa Police Department, the Texas Department of Public Safety and U.S. Border Patrol.
The incident also comes amid ongoing scrutiny of policies and oversight within the sheriff’s office. A prior review of county records found no standalone departmental policy manual governing use of force, with operations instead falling under the county’s general employee handbook.
Questions have also been raised following a 2024 use-of-force incident involving the publisher of Big Bend Times during a commissioners court meeting. A complaint filed over that incident was not resolved through a publicly documented, formal investigation, according to prior reporting.
Authorities have not yet released additional details, and the investigation remains ongoing.
