Big Bend Ranch Rodeo set for Aug. 7-8 in Alpine, supporting Sul Ross rodeo students

The Big Bend Ranch Rodeo will return Aug. 7-8, 2026, bringing working cowboys and cowgirls from across the country to Alpine for a weekend focused on ranching skills, western heritage and education.

The event, sanctioned by the Working Ranch Cowboys Association, features team-based competitions that reflect the day-to-day work of cattle producers rather than traditional timed rodeo events. Competing teams will be vying for a qualifying spot at the association’s World Championship Ranch Rodeo, held each November in Amarillo.

Organizers say the rodeo’s mission is to preserve western heritage by showcasing practical ranch work in a cultural and educational setting. Over its more than two-decade run, the event has also served as a major fundraiser for Sul Ross State University, supporting students in the university’s rodeo program.

According to organizers, the Big Bend Ranch Rodeo has raised more than $325,000 for Sul Ross through scholarships and program support since its inception.

The weekend begins Friday, Aug. 7, with gates opening at 5:30 p.m. and a WRCA-sanctioned adult team performance at 7 p.m. Activities resume Saturday, Aug. 8, with gates opening at 9:30 a.m., followed by a youth team performance at 11 a.m. Youth awards will be presented after the morning events.

Saturday evening includes a youth dummy roping competition at 5:30 p.m. and a second adult team performance at 7 p.m., with awards presented following the event.

Ranch rodeos differ from professional rodeos by emphasizing real-world ranch tasks such as cattle handling and teamwork. Participants are typically working ranch hands who make their living in agriculture, with events designed to highlight horsemanship, stewardship and the traditions of ranch life.

In addition to supporting education, proceeds from the rodeo contribute to WRCA programs, including a crisis fund that assists ranch families facing financial hardship and a scholarship fund for those pursuing higher education.

Organizers said the event also relies heavily on community support, with local sponsors providing funding, prizes and volunteer time to ensure the rodeo’s success.
