Sul Ross student-athletes host annual field day for students with disabilities

The Sul Ross State University Student Athletic Advisory Committee, in partnership with the 588 Education Cooperative, hosted its third annual Field Day on April 8 at the university recreation field.

Sponsored by the Office of Civic Engagement and Student Assistance, the event brought together Sul Ross student-athletes and K–12 students with disabilities from Alpine and Marfa for a day of recreational and sports-related activities focused on inclusion and engagement.

Throughout the event, student-athletes volunteered their time to lead adaptive games, physical activities and interactive stations designed to promote teamwork and accessibility. The field day aims to create meaningful connections between university athletes and local students while fostering a supportive and inclusive environment.

Now in its third year, the SAAC Field Day has become a recurring community event, strengthening ties between Sul Ross Athletics and surrounding school districts while highlighting the role of student-athletes as leaders and advocates.

Participants said the event offered a chance to engage with the community in a different way, while organizers noted it reflects the university’s broader commitment to service and experiential learning opportunities beyond the classroom.
