Posthumous Book Donation Honors Legacy of Sul Ross Scholar Earl H. Elam

The life and legacy of Dr. Earl H. Elam, founding director of the Center for Big Bend Studies, were honored last week with a posthumous book donation and memorial event at the Desoto Public Library.

Elam, who established the Center for Big Bend Studies in 1987, was recognized for his decades of service, scholarship and impact on the region. He died in 2024.

The event, held Thursday, brought together elected officials, family members and community supporters to commemorate Elam’s contributions and formally acknowledge the donation of his work to the library.

Organizers described the gathering as both a memorial and a celebration of Elam’s enduring influence. Attendees reflected on his role in advancing the study and preservation of the Big Bend region’s history and culture.

The Center for Big Bend Studies said Elam’s work and dedication continue to shape the institution and inspire future research, noting that his life of service left a lasting mark on the community.
