A traveling exhibition from the Smithsonian Institution will make its way to Alpine this summer as part of a statewide tour highlighting innovation in rural communities.
The exhibit, “Spark! Places of Innovation,” will be on display July 3 through Aug. 9, 2026, at the Museum of the Big Bend, bringing a national program to Far West Texas audiences.
The exhibition is part of Museum on Main Street, a collaboration between the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service (SITES), state humanities organizations and local host institutions. The initiative aims to share Smithsonian resources with communities outside Washington, D.C.
“Spark! Places of Innovation” explores how small towns across the country have fostered creativity, entrepreneurship and new ways of thinking. The exhibit examines how local history, leadership, collaboration and available resources contribute to innovation in rural America.
Organizers say the program underscores the idea that invention is not limited to major cities but is deeply rooted in small-town culture. From technological breakthroughs to artistic expression and community-driven solutions, rural areas continue to shape broader national trends.
Alpine is one of six Texas communities selected by the Texas Historical Commission to host the exhibit. The statewide tour begins in Kerrville in May before traveling to Alpine and continuing on to Taylor, Snyder, Brackettville and Atlanta through early 2027.
The stop in Alpine is expected to draw both residents and visitors interested in the intersection of local heritage and national storytelling. Additional details, including exhibit hours and related programming, are expected to be announced closer to the opening date.
