A ranger-led program highlighting native plant life in the Big Bend region is scheduled for Monday, April 27, at Fort Leaton State Historic Site.
The “Big Bend Bloom” event will take place from 10 to 11 a.m. and will explore the diverse flora of Big Bend Ranch, which is home to more than 59 species of cacti and approximately 1,300 plant species.
Participants will learn about the region’s plant life and take part in a hands-on activity creating decorative “forever flowers” using corn husks. The program will be led by park ranger Arian Velazquez-Ornelas alongside a special guest.
All materials for the activity will be provided. Attendees are encouraged to bring water.
The event is free with park admission. Entry to the site costs $5 per person for visitors age 13 and older, while children 12 and under are admitted free. Admission is also free for Texas State Parks Pass holders.
Organizers note that programs are subject to change, postponement or cancellation due to weather, and updates will be shared through park social media channels.
