Alvin Community College study abroad program brings students to Big Bend for immersive Texas history experience

An innovative “Texas Study Abroad” program launched by Alvin Community College brought students to West Texas last week, featuring a stop at Sul Ross State University and sites across the Big Bend region.

Supported by an Alvin Community College Foundation Innovation Grant, the program was designed to expand student success through hands-on, experiential learning. The initiative was part of an honors-level History of Texas course and took a cohort of approximately eight to 10 students on an eight-day यात्रा exploring key prehistoric and historic locations statewide.

Led by ACC faculty members Christopher Chance and Dr. Alexander Marriott, the program emphasized direct engagement with Texas history, allowing students to move beyond traditional classroom instruction and interact with cultural and historical sites firsthand.

During their time in Alpine, students collaborated with Sul Ross faculty and participated in lectures, workshops and group activities. The visit included a director-led tour of the Museum of the Big Bend, an archivist-guided session at the Archives of the Big Bend and programming through the Center for Big Bend Studies.

The Big Bend portion of the trip featured immersive experiences such as a professor-guided exploration of Big Bend National Park and an astronomer-led star party at McDonald Observatory. Students also visited significant regional sites including Fort Davis National Historic Site, Fort Leaton, Blackwell School National Historic Site and The Chinati Foundation.

Program organizers said the initiative addresses gaps in experiential learning by providing place-based education opportunities, particularly for students who may not otherwise have the ability to travel. Research shows that active engagement improves retention and academic performance.

In addition to site visits, students completed field assignments, presentations and reflective coursework designed to integrate their experiences with academic content. Each participant also completed an honors project, with options including primary-source research papers, historical mapping projects and historiography presentations.

The program also represents a broader effort to invest in high-impact teaching practices and institutional collaboration. Officials said the partnership with Sul Ross State University strengthens academic ties while creating new opportunities for student engagement and future programming.
