Fort Stockton student earns Reserve Supreme honor at Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo calf scramble

A student from Fort Stockton Independent School District capped off a year of work in the barn and show ring by earning a top honor at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo.

Meagan Hanson was named Reserve Supreme Overall Scramble Winner in the calf scramble program at the annual livestock show and rodeo in Houston. The recognition follows a yearlong project that began when Hanson caught a calf during last year’s event.

Participants in the calf scramble program receive a certificate to purchase a heifer and then spend the following year selecting, raising and preparing the animal for exhibition at the next show.

Hanson’s work culminated this year when she exhibited her heifer and earned the Reserve Supreme distinction, one of the program’s top awards.

In addition to the honor, Hanson received a $1,500 scholarship recognizing her effort and success in the calf scramble program.

Officials with Fort Stockton ISD said Hanson’s accomplishment reflects the dedication required for agricultural projects that students manage outside the classroom.

School officials praised Hanson’s commitment throughout the yearlong process — from catching the calf to raising and exhibiting the heifer — noting that the program is designed to teach responsibility, perseverance and hard work.

Her achievement, they said, represents a point of pride for the Fort Stockton chapter and the broader school community.
