Presidio Community Plans Poster-Making Event Ahead of Rally Opposing Proposed Border Wall

Community members in Presidio are organizing a poster-making and postcard-writing event ahead of a planned rally opposing the proposed construction of a border wall in the Big Bend region.

The event, titled “Nuestro Desierto, Nuestro Futuro / Our Desert, Our Future,” is scheduled for 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, March 18, at Galería Raíces, 800 O’Reilly St. in Presidio. Organizers say the gathering will allow residents to create signs for the upcoming demonstration and write postcards to elected officials.

According to event organizers, the gathering is intended to bring neighbors together to discuss concerns about the potential environmental and community impacts of a steel border wall along the Rio Grande.

“Not only will it have a huge impact on our ecosystem but it will affect our community in so many ways,” organizers wrote in a social media post promoting the event.

Participants are encouraged to bring poster board, cardboard and other materials to create signs. Paint and supplies will also be available at the venue. A live DJ performance by Denisse Rayas is scheduled during the event.

The poster-making event will help prepare for a community rally planned for the morning of Saturday, March 21, organizers said.

The event is being hosted by Galería Raíces, a local arts space in Presidio. Promotional materials for the gathering include the message “No Big Bend Wall” and invite residents to “bring your posters and neighbors.”

Organizers describe the event as part of a broader community effort to raise awareness about proposed border barrier construction in the region and its potential effects on local residents and the surrounding desert landscape.
