Vans marked with Statue of Liberty imagery and “Know Your Rights” messaging have appeared in multiple U.S. cities as volunteers follow federal immigration enforcement activity and share legal information with people who may encounter agents, according to reporting by The Guardian.
The vehicles, known as “Liberty Vans,” are operated by volunteers connected to the nonprofit Save America Movement. Organizers say the effort is intended to provide general rights education, connect individuals with attorneys and document enforcement activity by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, regardless of immigration status.
The vans have been deployed in cities including Los Angeles, Chicago, Charlotte and Minneapolis, often traveling to neighborhoods, workplaces and public gathering areas where enforcement activity has been reported, The Guardian said. Volunteers may include lawyers, clergy members and community advocates who distribute information and record interactions on video.
Organizers also collect footage and accounts of enforcement actions for public awareness and potential future review, reflecting ongoing national debate over immigration enforcement tactics and civil liberties concerns.
ICE has not publicly commented on the Liberty Vans initiative.
