Sul Ross State Rodeo Team awards scholarships to event champions at annual competition

Sul Ross State University recognized multiple student-athletes with scholarship awards following the fourth annual Sul Ross Rodeo Team Scholarship Rodeo, an event that drew competitors from across the United States and internationally, according to the university’s rodeo team.

Winners in each event received $500 scholarships during a presentation ceremony held at the university’s rodeo facilities Feb. 21.

According to the Sul Ross State University Rodeo Team, scholarship recipients included:

Tripp Kohweiler II, steer wrestling Zoey Cline, breakaway roping Shylene Drumm, team roping Billy Sellman, saddle bronc riding Reese Wood, barrel racing Bryce Gill, team roping Anthony Hatchet, bull riding

Photos shared by the team showed winners posing with oversized ceremonial checks alongside event organizers inside the arena.

In a social media post, the team said participants came “from all around the globe to compete,” highlighting the level of talent and sportsmanship displayed during the competition.

Sul Ross State University, located in Alpine, is known for its collegiate rodeo program and regularly hosts regional and national rodeo events that attract student competitors from across the country.

The scholarship rodeo serves as both a fundraising and recruitment event for the program, providing financial support to student-athletes while promoting collegiate rodeo in West Texas.
