Marfa Independent School District released the name of the only applicant seeking appointment to a vacant school board seat after inquiries from the Big Bend Sentinel, according to Sentinel reporting.
The district disclosed that state District Judge Genie Wright submitted a letter of interest for the position vacated in January. The school board met Wednesday to consider an appointment, but the outcome was not immediately known as of the Sentinel’s deadline.
The Sentinel reported the district had previously planned to review the letter in closed session before taking any action in open session. After the newspaper submitted a public information request seeking the applicant’s identity, the district released the letter.
According to Sentinel reporting, no candidates filed for the May uniform election for the board seat currently held by Lori Flores. The board also discussed the possibility of calling a special election that could reopen candidate filing under state timelines.
Wright is a full-time Marfa resident with experience in education and law, the Sentinel reported.
