Man detained after unlawful entry into Sul Ross dorm, investigation ongoing

A man was detained by law enforcement after entering the Lobo Village dormitory late Thursday night, according to the student newspaper Skyline.

No weapons were seized at the time of the arrest, and the identity of the individual has not yet been released, officials told Skyline, which cited university officials who spoke on condition of anonymity. Campus police and the Alpine Police Department are continuing to investigate the intrusion to determine whether it was an isolated incident.

The Sul Ross State University Office of Residential Living sent an email to residents at 11:43 p.m. notifying them that University Police and Alpine police were on campus and advising students to remain in their rooms until further notice.

“We (Office of Residential Living) are advising you stay in your unit and lock both locks as it is unsafe to leave your unit at this time,” the message said, also instructing residents not to open their doors for anyone.

Less than 30 minutes later, a second message informed students that “University Police has given us all clear” and that it was safe to leave their units.

University officials could not confirm whether the individual was a Sul Ross student. Officials indicated the person entered the dormitory through a door that had been propped open and reminded residents to ensure doors are firmly closed.

The Skyline student newspaper first reported the incident.
