National Read Aloud Celebration set for Feb. 4 at Sul Ross State University

Families with young children are invited to a National Read Aloud Celebration on Feb. 4 at the Sul Ross State University University Center, an evening event designed to promote literacy and family reading for children from pre-kindergarten through fourth grade.

The free program will take place from 5 to 7:30 p.m. and will feature pizza, a keynote presentation, and small-group reading activities. The event is open to children and their families.

Guest author Donna Washington will serve as the featured speaker. Each family in attendance will receive a complimentary copy of Prak Fills the House, written by Washington, while supplies last.

Registration is required and will be open from Jan. 12 through Jan. 27.

The event is supported by Humanities Texas, with additional sponsorship from Fort Street Books, West Texas National Bank, SRSU Education Department, Alpine Lion’s Club, and Kappa Delta Pi.

Featured books associated with the celebration include No Es Un Monstruo, We Found a Hat, Los Zombis No Comen Verduras, La Mosca Que Voló al Espacio, The Bad Seed Can Play Too?, Last Stop on Market Street, Prak Fills the House, Loud Voice, Silent Mask, Bad Guys, and Lobokang.

The program is part of a statewide effort to encourage reading aloud as a way to strengthen literacy skills and family engagement with books.
