Jeff Davis County Library to host talk on history and collecting of Katsina dolls

The Jeff Davis County Library will host a free public program exploring the history, cultural significance and ethical considerations surrounding Katsina (Kachina) dolls on Saturday, Jan. 31.

The presentation, titled “The History of Katsina (Kachina) Dolls and Considerations for Collecting Them,” will be led by Tim Roberts, a retired archaeologist with Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. The program begins at 11 a.m. at the Jeff Davis County Library, located at 100 Memorial Square in Fort Davis.

Katsina dolls, traditionally carved by Hopi artisans, are ceremonial objects used to teach cultural values, spiritual beliefs and clan histories. Roberts’ talk will provide historical context for the dolls while also addressing modern issues related to collecting, cultural sensitivity and preservation.

The event is sponsored by the Friends of the Jeff Davis County Library and is open to the public at no cost.
