Kokernot Field, the longtime home of baseball in Alpine, continues to add to its legacy as one of the most historic active ballparks in Texas.
The Alpine Cowboys, a member of the Pecos League, play their home games at Kokernot Field, which was built and opened for play in 1947. According to the travel site Authentic Texas, the ballpark was ready for games in May 1947 and cost about $1.25 million at the time.
A recent Pecos League post highlighted just how heavily Kokernot Field has been used in modern independent baseball: the league has played 464 games in Alpine’s historic venue since the league began using the facility. That total ranks among the highest in the circuit, trailing only Joe Bauman Stadium in Roswell, New Mexico, at 471 games, according to the league update.
Even with newer facilities across Texas and the Southwest, Kokernot Field remains a signature stop on the Pecos League schedule — blending small-town West Texas atmosphere with a ballpark that has been welcoming players and fans for generations.
For Alpine, the ballpark continues to serve as a seasonal gathering place where locals and visitors can watch professional baseball in a setting that has remained a defining part of the community since the late 1940s.
